Indian Consul General confers degrees and honours Alumni at BITS Pilani Dubai convocation

The BITS Pilani Dubai Campus celebrated its 21st convocation ceremony, as 275 students received their first degrees, higher degrees, and doctoral degrees.

Mr. Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, presided over the ceremony as Chief Guest, personally conferring degrees to all graduates, underscoring the strong educational ties between India and the UAE.

Senior dignitaries, including Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director of BITS Pilani Dubai Campus Prof. Souri Banerjee, and distinguished guests from BITS Pilani’s Indian campuses, attended the event to celebrate the students’ academic achievements.

In his keynote address, Satish Kumar Sivan expressed admiration for the graduates and their potential to influence future industries. He highlighted the institution’s role in nurturing global talent and fostering leadership in engineering and technology, and he also emphasized the significance of UAE-India educational partnerships.

This year’s convocation held special significance as BITS Pilani celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, commemorating 60 years of leadership in higher education. Reflecting on this milestone, Prof.

Banerjee stated, “2024 marks a significant moment in the journey of BITS Pilani. As we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee, BITS Pilani continues to stand as a beacon of higher education, consistently advancing pedagogy, research, and innovation. The Dubai Campus, now in its Silver Jubilee year, plays a key role in this legacy.”

Degrees were awarded to 238 students for first degrees, 26 for higher degrees, and 11 for doctoral degrees.

Special awards were also presented, including the Chancellor’s Medals for academic excellence to Anurag Kumar Jha, Juwaria Qadri, and Derrick Adrian Rodrigues. The Director’s All-Round Achievement Awards were given to Ahmed Thahir and Sarah Yusuf Khan Sarguroh for their outstanding contributions, both academically and beyond.

Vice Chancellor Dr. V. Ramgopal Rao emphasized the institution’s global impact, stating, “BITS Pilani has been a pioneer in technological education. Our Dubai Campus continues this tradition, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global market.”

The convocation also honoured three distinguished alumni. Adarsh Nair, a 2001 graduate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award 2024 for his leadership in digital transformation at companies like Microsoft and Airtel. Dr. Shilpa Sambashivan, awarded the Distinguished Services Award 2024, was recognized for her contributions to biotechnology and neurobiology research. Gaurav Chaudhary, a prominent Indian YouTuber, was honored with the Young Achievers Award 2024 for making technology accessible to millions.

The event was not only a celebration of academic success but also a testament to BITS Pilani’s commitment to shaping future leaders. The presence of esteemed guests, directors from various campuses, industry partners, and alumni highlighted the strong community that supports and elevates every BITSian.

As graduates embark on the next chapter of their lives, carrying forward the values and education instilled by BITS Pilani, they are poised to contribute to the global community, upholding the institution’s legacy of excellence and innovation.
