GEMS Education has launched a comprehensive zero-tolerance campaign to combat vaping among students, reinforcing its commitment to health and wellbeing.
As part of this initiative, GEMS will install cutting-edge vaping detection sensors across schools and implement random bag checks to ensure a vape-free environment. These measures will go hand-in-hand with increased awareness and education efforts to combat the growing global health risk.
Proactive measures to combat vaping
The new anti-vaping initiative includes the installation of state-of-the-art vaping detection sensors in GEMS schools, including the GEMS School of Research and Innovation, opening in August 2025. GEMS Education is the first major school group in the region to adopt such technology.
The sensors will be strategically placed in high-risk areas, providing real-time alerts to school administrators for swift intervention. Additionally, random bag checks will be conducted to further safeguard students’ health and prevent vaping on campus.
Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, stated: “Vaping is one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today. At GEMS Education, we refuse to stand by and let this dangerous trend take hold in our schools. Students found with vapes in our schools will receive a serious consequence and follow-up education sessions with counsellors to support them in quitting vaping.”
A comprehensive approach to student health
The sensors will not only detect vaping but also have the ability to distinguish between vaping and other airborne particles. Equipped with an audio function, they can alert staff to concerning words such as “help” that may indicate an issue. Alongside these measures, GEMS is ramping up student and parent education campaigns and integrating anti-vaping lessons into the curriculum.
Lisa Crausby further added: “This initiative goes beyond banning vaping; it is equipping our students with the knowledge and resilience to make better choices for their health. We are committed to working with our parents, educators, and the wider community to ensure that our young people grow up in a clean environment and prioritise their wellbeing.”
By being the first to implement such comprehensive anti-vaping measures, GEMS Education sets a powerful example for schools around the world. This initiative underscores GEMS’ dedication to student health and safety and reinforces its position as a leader in providing safe, healthy, and positive learning environments.
