In a significant move towards enhancing Dubai’s public transport infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a major procurement initiative under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Aligned with Dubai’s Urban Plan 2040, the initiative aims to achieve several critical objectives:

  •  Improving quality of life for residents and visitors by providing efficient and sustainable transportation options.
  •  Boosting Dubai’s status as a leading global hub for events and business.
  • Supporting the UAE’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The RTA has awarded a contract to purchase 636 buses, slated for delivery between 2024 and 2025. This procurement includes a mix of buses designed to meet diverse transport needs across the city.

  •  The buses adhere to stringent European emissions standards (Euro 6), with a notable inclusion of 40 electric buses, marking a milestone in sustainable transport within the UAE.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized the strategic importance of this procurement:

  •  The buses are part of a broader strategy to elevate Dubai’s public transport to international standards, ensuring top-tier service and accommodating growing ridership.
  •  The initiative supports Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33 and the Public Transport Zero Emissions in Dubai 2050 Strategy, aiming for 100% electric and hydrogen-powered public transport vehicles by 2050.

Features and specifications

Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, highlighted the advanced features of the new buses:

  •  Low floors for easy access, special seating for children, and amenities like Wi-Fi and charging points.
  •  Innovative technologies such as Driver Behaviour Monitoring and Automated Passenger Counting systems enhance safety and operational efficiency.
