Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract to develop the intersections of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street with Al Awir Road and Al Manama Street.
The project aims to expand road capacity, improve traffic flow, and support the city’s growing population.
Project details
The development will include 2,300 metres of bridges, additional lanes, service roads, and new entrances and exits to serve residential and development areas along the corridor.
The street’s capacity will increase from 5,200 vehicles per hour in both directions to 14,400 vehicles per hour, and travel time is expected to reduce from 20 minutes to five minutes. Completion is scheduled for the third quarter of 2028.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said: “Undertaking this project is part of RTA’s master plan to develop the roads, bridges, crossings, and tunnels network to accommodate growing traffic volumes, enhance mobility, and ensure smoother traffic flow across Dubai. This plan supports the needs of urban expansion and population growth. The project serves residential and development areas with a combined population of residents and visitors exceeding 600,000.”
The project will convert the existing roundabout at Al Awir Road into a grade-separated intersection with four lanes in each direction, including ramps for right- and left-turn movements. A bridge will also be built at the intersection of Al Awir Road with Emirates Road to facilitate traffic towards Al Awir and Sharjah. Parallel service roads will provide safe access to surrounding areas.
At the intersection with Al Manama Street, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street will be widened from two to four lanes in each direction. Signalised surface intersections will also be upgraded to improve traffic flow and safety.
Previous upgrades
The project forms part of wider improvements to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. Earlier phases included a four-lane extension over 25 kilometres, new intersections at Latifa bint Hamdan Street, Al Qudra Street, and Hessa Street, and bridge construction at Dubai Silicon Oasis. These works aimed to improve traffic movement towards Dubai Silicon Oasis, Zayed University, and the Academic City roundabout.
