In a major step toward future-proofing its education system, the UAE government has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will become a mandatory subject across public schools nationwide.
The decision, announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, reflects the country’s commitment to equipping students with the skills needed for a technology-driven future.
AI in the classroom from early years to graduation
AI education will now be embedded throughout the school curriculum, starting from kindergarten and continuing through to Grade 12.
Students in the senior years (Grades 11 and 12) will engage with real-life challenges using AI tools as part of the ‘Creative Design and Innovation’ course, while younger students will be introduced to foundational concepts in coding, problem-solving, and emerging technologies under subjects like ‘Design and Technology.’
The initiative is being led by the Ministry of Education, in coordination with leading global technology firms.
AI tutors and teacher upskilling
As part of the rollout, the Ministry is working with OpenAI and Microsoft to develop AI-powered digital tutors. These tools aim to enhance personalized learning, offer real-time feedback, and improve engagement in the classroom.
In addition, a nationwide training program is being launched to ensure all teachers are equipped to integrate AI into their instruction. The top 10 educators demonstrating excellence in AI teaching will be recognized at the upcoming AI Retreat in April 2025, with awards totaling Dhs 1 million.
This move is in line with the UAE’s broader ambitions to become a global leader in AI and digital innovation, as outlined in the UAE Centennial 2071 and Vision 2040 strategies.
By making AI education universal, the country is preparing a generation of students to actively participate in — and shape — the future digital economy.
