Qidfa Village in the Emirate of Fujairah has received international recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), joining the FAO Museum and Network (FAO MuNe) for its efforts in preserving food heritage and rural culture.
The certification highlights the UAE’s initiatives to safeguard biodiversity, protect traditional food practices, and integrate food culture with education, tourism, and community development.
Recognition for sustainability
His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, said the award “crowns the UAE’s sustained efforts, prudent policies, initiatives and impactful development projects aimed at achieving comprehensive and sustainable development whose positive outcomes extend across all regions of the country.”
He praised the role of national institutions in coordinating development strategies, emphasizing Fujairah’s focus on preserving heritage villages, protecting natural resources, and empowering local communities to strengthen national identity while balancing economic and social progress.
FAO MuNe membership
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “Qidfa Village’s accession to the FAO MuNe and its receipt of the international recognition certificate reflect the UAE’s commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural and food systems, protecting biodiversity, and preserving food heritage and local knowledge.”
She noted that the recognition aligns with the National Food Security Strategy and reinforces the role of UAE villages as models of environmentally and economically sustainable development.
Rural development initiatives
Mohamed Al Kaabi, Secretary-General of the Emirates Council for Balanced Development, said the award reflects integrated national efforts to develop rural areas and empower villages economically and socially.
He added that the Council is implementing initiatives to improve quality of life, support local activities, and transform villages into cultural and tourism destinations, while preserving their unique heritage and environment.
Qidfa Village’s inclusion in FAO MuNe positions it as a global example of sustainable rural development and heritage preservation, reinforcing the UAE’s ongoing commitment to balancing tradition with innovation.
