Brighton College Abu Dhabi and Brighton College Dubai hosted former NASA astronaut Dr Don Thomas for a two-day programme aimed at strengthening pupils’ interest in space science and STEM subjects.
Dr Thomas, who spent more than 1,040 hours in space during four Space Shuttle missions, shared firsthand insights from his career with pupils across both campuses.
Space science
The visit supported the UAE’s growing space sector and its national focus on science and technology education. Dr Thomas spoke about his missions aboard Space Shuttle Columbia and Discovery, explaining scientific work in orbit, satellite operations and daily life on board. He also discussed perseverance and goal-setting, offering pupils a practical perspective on space exploration.
Abu Dhabi sessions
At Brighton College Abu Dhabi, Dr Thomas met pupils from all year groups through classroom activities, presentations and discussions. Older pupils were briefed on topics such as how time is measured in space and the demands of Shuttle missions.
Year 13 pupil Taoyang Ding said: “The key message I took is that remarkable accomplishments are often achieved by ordinary people who commit wholeheartedly to their goals. It showed how perseverance and patience make even the most challenging goals possible.”
Dubai workshops
At Brighton College Dubai, Dr Thomas led assemblies and workshops for pupils from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form. Sessions for Years 10 and 11 focused on STEM pathways, while Sixth Form pupils received guidance linked to university preparation in science and engineering.
The workshops formed part of the school’s broader STEM programme, which includes access to Senior School laboratories and pupil-led STEM activities.
Dr Thomas said: “My visit to Brighton College Abu Dhabi and Brighton College Dubai was outstanding. The excitement from children and staff was palpable, real, and exciting to see. It was a pleasure to meet with and speak to groups across all year levels, including some of the youngest in their themed costumes for the day.
“Discussions and questions from the older pupils really highlight the strengths of Brighton College’s curriculum and the preparation that is provided to those headed to universities globally. The EverCurious Space team is excited to return in 2026 to continue the pupils’ Space education journey with a SpaceWise Academy.”
The programme offered pupils a rare opportunity to hear from an experienced astronaut and supported both schools’ focus on strengthening STEM education and preparing future scientists and engineers.
