The airport experience is evolving beyond just a transit hub, and the rise of the “gate escape” is one of the most exciting trends expected to take center stage at the 32nd edition of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025.
This year’s event, taking place from April 28 to May 1, 2025, at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), will shine a spotlight on how modern travellers — particularly Gen Z and millennials — are redefining airports as destinations for entertainment, relaxation, and luxury.
According to Booking.com’s annual travel prediction research, 43% of these travellers are now choosing destinations based on the airport’s offerings, opting for indulgent experiences such as sleep pods (37% Gen Z, 35% millennials), spas (31% Gen Z, 29% millennials), and Michelin star restaurants (22% Gen Z, 24% millennials).
Airports become hubs for luxury and leisure
As this transformation continues to unfold, the Arabian Travel Market will feature discussions on how airports are becoming hubs for luxury and leisure, with several major players from the international aviation sector in attendance. The four-day event will cover a wide range of trending topics, including sustainable aviation, innovative technology, the return of corporate travel, and the growing appeal of airport-based entertainment.
Sustainable aviation in focus at ATM 2025
Sustainable aviation, particularly the rise of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), will also be a key theme at ATM. The International Aviation Transport Association (IATA) recently reported that SAF production doubled in 2024, with an expected 2.1 million tonnes to be produced in 2025. Emirates and Etihad have been leading the charge in using SAF on key international routes, significantly reducing their carbon footprints.
Artificial intelligence
New technology will further shape discussions, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an integral tool for the aviation sector. From streamlining customer journeys to enhancing air traffic control, AI’s role in optimizing airport operations and reducing costs is undeniable. Notable examples include London Heathrow’s AI-assisted air traffic control system, Japan Airlines’ AI-powered baggage management, and Gatwick Airport’s smart-stand technology designed for more efficient aircraft turnarounds.
The growth of the aviation sector itself is also generating significant buzz. By 2025, industry revenues are expected to surpass US$1 trillion, with the number of travelers forecasted to hit 5.2 billion—an increase of 6.7% from 2024. In this dynamic landscape, business travel is projected to surge, with 40% of companies planning to increase travel in 2025, as revealed by Flight Centre Corporate.
Exhibitors at ATM Dubai
In addition to these critical industry topics, ATM 2025 will also see a significant increase in aviation exhibitors, with major names such as Emirates, flydubai, and flynas showcasing their latest innovations. Last year, 4.5% of exhibitors were from the aviation sector, occupying 10% of the show space, and a substantial growth in aviation presence is expected this year.
Sessions already confirmed include the Global Stage’s Connecting the Future of Travel panel, which will delve into how advancements in aviation, cruise, and rail are driving connectivity regionally and internationally, with an emphasis on sustainability and transformative projects.
Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, shared, “At ATM, we recognize the critical importance of addressing the latest trends and innovations shaping the aviation industry. From new technologies to sustainable fuel, the developments taking place now will have far-reaching benefits for the sector and for travellers in the years to come.”
As the travel landscape continues to evolve, ATM 2025 will continue to be the ultimate platform for exploring the future of aviation, connectivity, and global tourism.
