Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), has completed the expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport.
The upgrade increased the number of traffic lanes from three to four, raising the bridge’s capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour — a 33% increase. This expansion aims to improve traffic flow to the airport terminal, reduce journey times, and enhance overall road connectivity in the area.
The new bridge was built using a steel box girder structure combined with a composite concrete deck. This method allowed faster construction without the need for traffic diversions on Airport Street or temporary supports under the bridge, maintaining safe and uninterrupted traffic throughout the project. Additional works included road pavement improvements, upgrades to utility services, landscaping, and new street lighting for better visibility and safety.
The project reflects coordinated efforts between RTA and DAEP to meet current and future traffic demands of Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest airport for international passengers. It supports sustainable growth in passenger numbers and air traffic by improving transport infrastructure linked to the airport.
RTA and DAEP emphasized their ongoing commitment to developing infrastructure that strengthens Dubai’s position as a global air transport hub, while enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors through improved traffic management and transport services.
