Abu Dhabi announces 90-day maternity leave

Abu Dhabi has announced an extension of maternity leave for Emirati women working in the private sector. Starting September 1, 2024, Emirati mothers in private companies will receive 90 days of maternity leave. This extension, up from the previous 60 days, aims to give mothers more time to rest and care for their newborns.

Previously, Emirati women in the public sector have been entitled to three months of paid maternity leave. In contrast, those in the private sector were only eligible for 60 days — 45 days fully paid and 15 days partially paid, as per UAE Labour Law.

Under the new policy, the Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority will oversee the implementation of this extended leave. Additionally, the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority will launch a ‘home visit service’ to support new mothers during their first weeks. This service will help monitor the baby’s development and provide assistance to parents.

Alongside these updates, Emirati couples will also have access to various support measures, including marriage loans, loan reductions, and rental assistance, as part of broader financial relief packages.
