Abu Dhabi to upgrade Mussafah roads with new highway and bridges

Motorists travelling between Mussafah, Mohamed Bin Zayed City and Zayed City are set to benefit from planned road improvements covering approximately 13 kilometres in Abu Dhabi, including a new free-flowing highway, upgraded interchanges and additional bridges.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) announced the project along E30 and 8th Street in Mussafah, with the aim of easing congestion, improving road safety and reducing journey times for commuters and businesses.

Mussafah road upgrade: What will change?

The centrepiece of the project is a new highway along 8th Street, featuring three lanes in each direction for through traffic. Three additional lanes on either side will provide access to nearby shops and amenities, helping separate local traffic from vehicles travelling through the area.

The upgraded street is expected to accommodate around 4,000 vehicles per hour.

The wider project also includes improvements to four interchanges along E30, better connections with 8th Street and E20, and modifications to nine major junctions.

New bridges to connect Mussafah and Mohamed Bin Zayed City

Plans include two new bridges linking Mussafah with Mohamed Bin Zayed City, alongside a dedicated pedestrian bridge.

The improvements are intended to strengthen connections between residential communities and the industrial area, which serves daily commuters, businesses and freight movements.

DMT said the project is designed to accommodate both through traffic and local access while supporting the area’s future development.

Abu Dhabi plans wider transport connections

The Mussafah improvements form part of broader efforts to strengthen connectivity across Abu Dhabi. These include a planned undersea road link comprising two tunnels connecting the eastern tip of Abu Dhabi Island with Mussafah beneath Khor Al Maqta and the Al Hudayriyat Island channel.

The DMT announcement did not specify a completion date for the Mussafah road project. Motorists should therefore treat the upgrades as planned works rather than assume the new roads and bridges are already open.
