Dubai’s road network handles over 3.5 million vehicles daily

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the emirate’s modern road network now accommodates more than 3.5 million vehicles each day, reflecting two decades of steady infrastructure growth under the guidance of the emirate’s leadership.

Expanding transport infrastructure

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the government has invested Dhs175 billion over the past 20 years to develop Dubai’s road and transport systems.

He noted that landmark projects such as the Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, and an advanced 25,000 lane-kilometre road network have reshaped the city’s urban landscape and enhanced its global competitiveness.

According to RTA, the number of bridges and tunnels across Dubai has grown from 129 in 2006 to 1,050 by the end of 2024, while pedestrian bridges and tunnels rose from 26 to 177 during the same period. These developments, combined with intelligent traffic systems, have significantly improved mobility and safety.

RTA also operates a fleet of more than 1,300 buses and 31,000 taxis and limousines, supported by over 130 smart digital services designed to meet the needs of residents and visitors.

A study by McKinsey & Company found that RTA’s projects have generated Dhs150 billion in revenues and reduced fuel and time costs by Dhs319 billion. The study also credited RTA’s infrastructure with lowering travel times, improving traffic safety, and contributing to a higher quality of life across Dubai.

RTA plans to continue expanding smart and sustainable mobility initiatives, including autonomous taxis, the aerial taxi service, and the Dubai Metro Blue Line, which will serve an estimated one million residents by 2040.
