Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered inspection system to improve the safety and efficiency of Dubai Metro’s infrastructure maintenance.

AI-based system rollout

The Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS) uses robotics, 3D cameras, lasers, and sensors to inspect metro tracks and related infrastructure without disrupting operations.

The system enables real-time data collection and analysis, allowing for more precise maintenance decisions and reducing dependence on time-consuming manual inspections.

According to the RTA, ARIIS is currently being deployed on select metro lines, with plans to expand its use across the full network following technical and operational evaluations.

Reduced time and costs

Since its implementation, ARIIS has helped reduce the time needed for scheduled inspections by 75%, saving approximately 1,700 work hours.

Traditional inspection tasks have been cut by 70%, and infrastructure condition assessments have improved by 40%.

The system supports proactive maintenance, extending the life of assets and lowering periodic maintenance costs by up to 25%.

It has also improved resource efficiency by 40%, reducing unnecessary interventions.

The RTA is also considering using ARIIS or similar technologies on other transport systems, such as the Dubai Tram, depending on technical feasibility and infrastructure needs.

Safety and operational standards

Inspections are conducted during scheduled night-time maintenance windows in coordination with the control centre to ensure safety and avoid service disruption. The RTA confirmed that all procedures follow strict occupational safety guidelines.

“This solution underscores Dubai Metro’s commitment to enhancing safety, efficiency, and reliability through pioneering smart technologies,” the RTA stated.

The AI system collects detailed data on cracks, wear, and deviations in the rail network, helping Dubai move towards predictive, data-driven infrastructure management.
