WhatsApp users with older iPhone models will lose access to the messaging platform starting June 1, 2025, as the company phases out support for devices running outdated iOS versions.

iOS 15.1 required

From June 1, iPhones must be running iOS 15.1 or later to continue using WhatsApp. Devices operating on earlier versions will no longer be compatible, including:

  • iPhone 5s

  • iPhone 6

  • iPhone 6 Plus

These models have already been classified as obsolete by Apple and no longer receive software or hardware support.

Security and privacy concerns

The decision is part of WhatsApp’s effort to strengthen user security. Older operating systems that no longer receive regular updates are more vulnerable to security threats.

In a statement, WhatsApp explained: “Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. Every year, we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.”

By limiting support to newer iOS versions, the company aims to protect user data and ensure access to updated features and enhanced privacy tools.

WhatsApp Business also affected

The change will impact both personal and business users. WhatsApp Business, which is widely used by small businesses for communication, will also stop functioning on unsupported devices.

Users relying on these older iPhones are advised to upgrade to newer devices or update their software if possible, to avoid service interruption.
