UFC 333 draws biggest crowd in Abu Dhabi history

UFC 333 Abu Dhabi set new records for attendance and ticket revenue at Etihad Arena, with more than half of the spectators travelling from outside the UAE, as Alexander Volkanovski and Petr Yan successfully defended their world titles on Saturday night.

UFC CEO Dana White confirmed that the event recorded the highest attendance and gate revenue for a UFC event in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the emirate’s international appeal as a destination for major mixed martial arts (MMA) events.

The sold-out show featured two title fights, with Volkanovski stopping previously unbeaten Movsar Evloev in the second round and Yan defeating Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision.

UFC 333 Abu Dhabi breaks attendance and revenue records

Speaking after the event at Etihad Arena, White said more than 50% of attendees had travelled from outside the UAE, bringing additional visitors to Abu Dhabi for the fights.

“Tonight was the highest attendance for a UFC event in Abu Dhabi history. Highest gate,” White said, referring to the revenue generated from ticket sales.

He highlighted the spending associated with international visitors, including flights and hotel accommodation, and said he wanted to deliver events that justified fans’ investment in travelling to the UAE capital.

White also confirmed his intention to bring more major UFC events to Abu Dhabi, revealing that the organisation was already exploring plans for a future event with a distinctive format or setting.

“We’re working on an event right now that will be very unique and people from all over the world will want to come see,” he said, adding that he hoped to announce further details soon.

The comments point to continued plans for UFC events in Abu Dhabi, although no date or venue details were confirmed for the proposed special event.

Alexander Volkanovski stops Movsar Evloev to retain featherweight title

The main event delivered a decisive result as Alexander Volkanovski retained his UFC featherweight championship with a second-round technical knockout victory over Movsar Evloev.

Volkanovski stopped the previously unbeaten challenger with punches at 4:54 of the second round, handing Evloev the first defeat of his professional career.

The result strengthened Volkanovski’s record as a champion and gave Abu Dhabi fans a dramatic finish to the evening’s headline bout.

Reflecting on his return to the UAE capital, Volkanovski praised the welcome he has received during his visits.

“Abu Dhabi is always great. This is my fifth time here in Abu Dhabi. I get treated so well over here. Everyone’s very hospitable and they show so much respect. I love it here,” he said.

His comments underlined the role Abu Dhabi has played in hosting major UFC contests and attracting international fighters and fans.

Petr Yan defeats Merab Dvalishvili in bantamweight title fight

In the co-main event, Petr Yan retained his UFC bantamweight championship after defeating Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision in their third meeting.

The five-round contest went the distance, with all three judges scoring the fight 48-47 in Yan’s favour.

The narrow decision added another chapter to the rivalry between the two fighters and marked another significant Abu Dhabi moment for Yan.

He previously won the bantamweight title against Jose Aldo in the UAE capital during UFC Fight Island in 2020.

Speaking after his latest victory, Yan said he was still processing the result but was pleased to celebrate the moment in Abu Dhabi.

“For me, it was important to get this win for my team, for my family and for my supporters,” he said, thanking fans around the world for their support.

UFC 333 main card delivers three more stoppage victories

The event also featured several notable performances across the main card.

  • Lone’er Kavanagh defeated Ramazan Temirov by first-round technical knockout.
  • Alexander Volkov earned a unanimous decision victory over Rizvan Kuniev.
  • Aaron Pico secured a first-round technical knockout win against Losene Keita.

The results added to an action-packed evening that featured championship defences and stoppage victories at Etihad Arena.

What UFC 333 means for Abu Dhabi’s sports tourism ambitions

The attendance and ticket revenue records provide another indication of Abu Dhabi’s ability to attract international audiences for major sporting events.

With more than half of the UFC 333 crowd arriving from outside the UAE, the event brought visitors who required travel and accommodation, supporting demand associated with sports tourism.

The sold-out arena also demonstrated the international following of the UFC and its potential to draw spectators beyond the local market.

For Abu Dhabi, hosting high-profile championship fights offers an opportunity to showcase the emirate to visitors while strengthening its profile in the global sports and entertainment calendar.

White’s comments about a future, as-yet-unannounced UFC event suggest the organisation is exploring further opportunities in the capital. However, details of the proposed event have not yet been confirmed.

UFC 333 also brought another edition of Abu Dhabi Showdown Week to a close, with the title victories by Volkanovski and Yan providing the sporting highlights of a record-setting night.
