Flydubai launches daily flights to Damascus

flydubai operated its inaugural flight to Damascus International Airport on June 1, receiving a traditional water cannon salute. The daily service from Terminal 2 at Dubai International Airport marks the airline’s return to Syria after nearly 12 years.

The flight was welcomed by a delegation of officials, including the UAE Ambassador to Syria, His Excellency Hassan Ahmed Al Shehhi.

“We are pleased to announce the resumption of operations by the UAE national carrier, flydubai, to the Syrian Arab Republic. This milestone reflects the deep-rooted and fraternal relations between the United Arab Emirates and Syria,” said Al Shehhi.

Hamad Obaidalla, Chief Commercial Officer at flydubai, added: “Flydubai has a longstanding commitment to further enhance connectivity in the region and we are very pleased to offer our passengers the opportunity to fly directly to Syria again.”

Emirates to restart in July

Emirates is also set to resume its operations to Damascus starting July 16, 2025. The airline will begin with three weekly flights before gradually increasing to daily services by October 26. The initial flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays, using a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft.

“Emirates is pleased to restart operations to Damascus and support Syria’s road ahead by providing better choice and connectivity,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.

The flights are expected to benefit both travellers and trade, with the UAE-Syria trade volume reaching Dhs 2.5 billion in 2024. Emirates also highlighted that the move will support Syria’s reconstruction efforts and provide opportunities for the Syrian diaspora to reconnect with their homeland.

Codeshare and community support

Emirates customers will also benefit from the airline’s codeshare partnership with flydubai, offering increased flexibility and convenience when flying to and from Damascus. The return of both carriers is seen as part of a broader effort to support bilateral ties and regional economic growth.

The UAE is home to over 350,000 Syrians, many of whom have contributed to the country’s economy through skilled professions and entrepreneurship.
