Etihad Rail passengers are set to benefit from enhanced convenience as plans unfold to integrate nol cards for their upcoming travel requirements.

Amidst the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Finance, alongside Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, bore witness to the signing of a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This landmark agreement, forged between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Etihad Rail, marks the initiation of a collaborative endeavor.

The primary aim of this partnership is to develop ticket booking and fare payment solutions through the nol system, a crucial step aligned with the UAE Digital Government Strategy 2025 and the Dubai Digital Strategy, both geared towards digital transformation in Dubai.

The nol card, a versatile smart card, has been instrumental in facilitating payment transactions across RTA’s public transport networks and parking zones. Its versatility extends to entry fees at various attractions and retail purchases. With over five million active users and more than 30 million cards sold since its inception in September 2009, the nol card has become an integral part of Dubai’s transportation ecosystem.

The ongoing project to upgrade the nol system incorporates digital payment technologies, aligning with international best practices. With an estimated cost of Dhs350 million, this project aims to introduce a digital payment system using central transportation tariff wallet technology, enhancing operational efficiency and security standards.

Since its launch alongside the Dubai Metro in 2009, the nol card has continually evolved to meet the growing needs of Dubai’s residents and visitors. Its expanded functionalities resonate with RTA’s digital strategy, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing the overall public transportation experience in Dubai.

The signing ceremony, attended by Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, witnessed the agreement signed by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, and Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail.

This partnership between Etihad Rail and RTA aims to elevate the standard of passenger trains and ensure a seamless travel experience across the national railway network. Under the guidance of the UAE’s leadership, this network has swiftly attained a prominent position, contributing significantly to the enhancement of the UAE’s transport and infrastructure landscape. Moreover, it plays a pivotal role in fostering economic development and reinforcing the UAE’s stature as a regional and global transportation hub.
