Dubai has achieved a remarkable milestone in its tourism sector, welcoming 9.31 million international overnight visitors from January to June 2024.

This represents a 9% increase compared to the 8.55 million visitors recorded during the same period in 2023. This uptick continues the city’s impressive growth trajectory following a landmark year in 2023, when Dubai hosted 17.15 million international visitors.

Strong tourism momentum in Dubai

Dubai’s continued success in tourism reflects the city’s robust strategy and leadership. Guided by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has been instrumental in driving this growth. The city’s strong performance in the first half of 2024 sets it on a path to achieve record numbers by the end of the year.

Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum praised the city’s tourism sector for its growth and global appeal. He emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships and creating memorable experiences to enhance Dubai’s position as a top global destination.

International recognition and accolades

Dubai’s growth in international visitation is not only a testament to its effective tourism strategies but also to its global recognition. In January 2024, Dubai was named the world’s top travel destination for the third consecutive year by Tripadvisor. Additionally, the city was honored as the Middle East’s leading destination by the World Travel Awards. Dubai International Airport and Mina Rashid also received accolades as the leading airport and cruise port in the region.

Key source markets driving growth

The increase in visitor numbers is supported by targeted campaigns and collaborations with over 3,000 global partners. Key markets contributing to this growth include:

  • GCC and MENA: 26% share of total visitors, with 1.27 million from GCC and 1.09 million from MENA.
  • Western Europe: 20% share, totaling 1.89 million visitors.
  • South Asia: 17% share with 1.62 million visitors.
  • CIS and Eastern Europe: 15% share with 1.37 million visitors.
  • North-East and South-East Asia: 10% share, growing significantly due to recovery in China.
  • Other Regions: Including the Americas, Africa, and Australasia.

Growth in hospitality

Dubai’s hospitality sector remains a cornerstone of its tourism appeal. Recent hotel openings include the Lana by Dorchester Collection, SIRO One Za’abeel, and Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences. The city’s hotel sector saw increased occupancy rates, with an average occupancy of 78.7% in the first half of 2024, up from 77.7% in the previous year. Additionally, average daily rates (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR) also rose, reflecting strong demand.

Major attractions and partnerships

Dubai continues to enhance its global appeal with new attractions and partnerships. The launch of Real Madrid World at Dubai Parks and Resorts, and ongoing collaborations with renowned figures like Hans Zimmer, highlight the city’s commitment to expanding its entertainment and cultural offerings. The city also featured prominently in global culinary rankings, including the MICHELIN Guide Dubai and Time Out’s list of top cities for food.

Cruise sector and global events

Dubai’s cruise sector has expanded significantly, with over 132 ship calls during the 2023/2024 winter season. The city also hosted major global events, including the Dubai Shopping Festival and Dubai Food Festival, reinforcing its status as a premier international events destination.

Commitment to inclusivity and sustainability

Dubai is also focusing on inclusivity and sustainability. Efforts to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities are ongoing, with key attractions and hotels working towards certification as autism-friendly destinations. The city’s sustainability initiatives include the Dubai Can campaign, which has significantly reduced single-use plastic bottle usage, and the Dubai Reef project, aimed at developing the largest marine reef in the world.

Looking ahead

As Dubai continues to build on its tourism success, it remains committed to further enhancing its global standing through innovative partnerships, exceptional visitor experiences, and ongoing sustainability efforts. With its strategic approach and robust infrastructure, Dubai is poised to set new records and strengthen its position as a leading global destination in 2024 and beyond.
