Salik tag grace period and fines explained

If you’re a resident of Dubai or the UAE and frequently hit the road, you’re likely familiar with the Salik toll system.

Designed to ease traffic flow, Salik uses RFID technology to deduct toll fees as you pass through designated toll gates.

However, what if you find yourself driving through a Salik toll gate without the essential Salik tag on your vehicle? Here, Dubai Newsweek delves into the consequences and the grace period provided for rectification.

Salik tag grace period and fines explained

If you forget to install a Salik tag on your vehicle, you’re granted a 10-working-day grace period from the date and time of your first trip through the Salik toll gates. This window allows you to purchase, activate, and affix a Salik tag to your vehicle.

Failing to adhere to the grace period results in violations, with escalating penalties for each subsequent offense:

  • Dhs100 for the first trip after the grace period.
  • Dhs200 for the second trip after the grace period.
  • Dhs400 for each subsequent trip after the grace period.

It’s crucial to note that all the mentioned violations are capped at one per day per vehicle. This means that even if you make multiple trips through Salik toll gates in a single day without a Salik tag, you’ll only incur the highest applicable penalty once.

Purchasing and activating Salik tag

To avoid violations and penalties, residents can easily obtain a Salik tag from authorized outlets. Once acquired, the tag must be activated and properly affixed to the vehicle’s windshield. If you already have a Salik account, adding a new tag is a seamless process.

The process of purchasing, activating, and managing your Salik tag can be done online through the official Salik website. This offers convenience for busy individuals who may not have the time to visit physical outlets.

Salik users are advised to regularly check their account balance and ensure the tag is functioning correctly. Notifications are often sent in case of low balances or other issues, helping users stay on top of their Salik account status.

To avoid unintentional violations, ongoing educational initiatives by Salik authorities help inform residents about the importance of having an active Salik tag and the associated penalties for non-compliance.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to forget essential details like affixing a Salik tag to your vehicle. However, being aware of the grace period and the subsequent penalties for non-compliance can save you from unnecessary fines.
