Union Coop partners with Peekabox to reduce food waste in UAE

Union Coop has partnered with UAE-based digital platform Peekabox to tackle food waste and support national food security goals.

The initiative will start in Union Coop’s bakery departments, where unsold fresh products at the end of each day will be offered to customers at discounted prices through Peekabox’s “Surprise Box” model. The approach aims to ensure quality products are used efficiently instead of being discarded.

Mohamed Al Hashemi, CEO of Union Coop, said: “Food waste is not just an environmental issue, it is an efficiency issue. Through this partnership, we are treating surplus as an opportunity. We are improving how we manage products, while delivering additional value to the community without compromising quality or availability.”

He added that the program will begin as a pilot, with performance closely monitored before expanding to other product categories.

Peekabox allows users to buy surplus food from restaurants, cafés, and retailers at reduced prices, supporting the circular economy and reducing losses across the supply chain.

The collaboration is expected to raise consumer awareness about responsible consumption and highlight the retail sector’s role in food security, operational efficiency, and sustainable practices in the UAE.
