Emirates has completed the first installation of Starlink Wi-Fi on its Airbus A380, marking a major upgrade to in-flight internet for passengers. The newly equipped aircraft has returned to Dubai and is expected to enter service soon.
The airline said the new system will significantly improve internet speeds onboard. Earlier systems offered less than 1 Mbps, while the upgraded setup with three Starlink antennas is designed to deliver much higher bandwidth, enabling passengers to stream, browse, work, and play games during flights.
The service will be free for all passengers across cabin classes, with simple access on personal devices. Future plans include live TV streaming, initially on personal devices and later on seatback screens.
First A380 upgrade
The installation and certification were completed in Newquay, UK. Emirates plans to expand the rollout across more A380 aircraft during 2026, alongside existing upgrades on its Boeing 777 fleet.
So far, 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft have been fitted with Starlink, and more than 650,000 passengers have already used the service on those flights.
Technical features
The Airbus A380, known for its double-decker design and high passenger capacity, required a customised setup. The system is capable of delivering more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth across the aircraft.
Compared to the Boeing 777, the A380 uses additional wireless access points and a third antenna to support more users and maintain stable connectivity across both decks.
Emirates said installations will soon expand at its engineering facilities in Dubai to speed up deployment across its fleet. The airline aims to introduce the upgraded connectivity on more aircraft in the coming months.
The move is part of Emirates’ wider efforts to improve passenger experience. The airline has refurbished 93 aircraft so far, adding Premium Economy cabins, upgraded Business Class and First Class, and improved interiors and entertainment systems with more than 6,500 channels.
In 2025, Emirates also opened an $8 million Centre of Hospitality Excellence to train its 25,000 cabin crew.
