A new global study has revealed that nearly every child in the UAE — a remarkable 98% — considers big, exciting adventures essential for their ideal holiday.
Commissioned by Experience Abu Dhabi, the destination brand of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the survey taps into what really matters to the next generation of travellers.
Young travellers crave connection
The study polled over 7,000 children aged 5 to 12, along with their parents, across nine countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, UK, US, India, China, France, Germany, and Italy.
While fun and adventure topped the list, the data also pointed to deeper desires: 90% of children globally want activities that help them make new friends, and 91% are inspired by experiences their peers have had.
Rather than passive entertainment, kids are looking for holidays that let them engage, explore, and connect — with others and with their own imaginations.
From waterparks to wildlife, children are seeking moments they can share and stories they can tell.
Imagination over screens
A striking 89% of children said they want to experience their favourite video games or movies in real life while on holiday.
Make-believe isn’t just play — it’s how kids want to travel. Whether it’s becoming a race car driver, a superhero, or an animal explorer for a day, children are eager to dive into immersive, interactive experiences.
As Nouf Mohamed Al-Bushlaibi, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications at DCT Abu Dhabi, explained, “We commissioned this research to hear what truly matters to children… They want connection, adventure, and the freedom to play out the stories they love.”
Abu Dhabi: Designed with kids in mind
With its wide range of kid-friendly attractions, Abu Dhabi is fast becoming a top destination for family travel. Experiences like Warner Bros. World, Emirates Park Zoo, Yas Waterworld, and the soon-to-open teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi offer exactly the kind of excitement and imagination today’s young travellers are asking for.
To take things a step further, Experience Abu Dhabi even asked children to design their dream itinerary — a seven-day adventure filled with cultural exploration, thrilling activities, and time with family.
The message is clear: kids want holidays that feel like adventures, and Abu Dhabi is ready to deliver.
