Top Oman destinations to visit from the UAE this summer

As temperatures soar across the UAE this summer, a growing number of residents are heading across the border in search of cooler weather and scenic retreats.

Oman, known for its diverse natural beauty and easy road and air access from the Emirates, is emerging as a top destination — especially two key regions: Al Jabal Al Akhdar and Dhofar.

Mountain retreat in the north

Just a few hours’ drive from the UAE border, Al Jabal Al Akhdar, also known as The Green Mountain, offers a rare escape from the Gulf’s heat. Located 2,000 metres above sea level in Oman’s Hajar Mountains, the area maintains spring-like temperatures even in peak summer.

Known for its terraced orchards and cliff-side walking trails, the region appeals to UAE travellers looking for peace and nature.

Resorts in the area combine luxury with local culture, offering experiences such as sunrise meditation, farm-to-table Omani cuisine, and panoramic views over the canyons.

Khareef brings green south

In Oman’s southern Dhofar region, the monsoon-like Khareef season—running from June to September—transforms the landscape into mist-covered hills and lush greenery. Salalah, the regional capital, hosts Khareef Dhofar 2025, a seasonal festival combining culture, family-friendly entertainment, and outdoor experiences.

Festival highlights include drone shows, light installations, and international concerts, alongside themed parades and children’s attractions like The Princess Palace. Cultural shows, local crafts, and heritage displays are staged at Sumhuram Archaeological Park and nearby souqs.

Active options for visitors

For UAE residents looking for activity-filled getaways, Salalah offers a busy sporting calendar. Events like the Salalah Marathon, Dhofar Drag Racing Championship, and Tour of Salalah cycling race cater to athletes and spectators alike.

Public parks across the city feature running and cycling tracks, fitness areas, and sports courts—encouraging outdoor activity in the region’s rare summer cool.

Easy access from UAE

With direct flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah to both Muscat and Salalah, Oman is an increasingly accessible destination for weekend road trips or longer holidays. Many UAE residents also drive to Oman via Hatta or Al Ain, making the journey part of the adventure.

Accommodation options range from luxury mountain resorts to heritage coastal lodges, catering to solo travellers, couples, and families alike.

“Oman’s summer appeal lies in its natural contrast,” said an Oman tourism official. “While much of the region is hot and dry, our mountains and southern coast offer fresh air, green landscapes, and rich cultural immersion.”
