Government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs and technology experts from across the Gulf gathered in Dubai for the “Women’s Gateway to the Digital Economy” conference, which focused on expanding women’s participation in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Held under the patronage and in the presence of Sheikha Wafa bint Humaid Al Mualla, the event brought together representatives from the public and private sectors to discuss opportunities and challenges in the growing digital economy.
Women and technology
In her opening remarks, Sheikha Wafa bint Humaid Al Mualla said Gulf and Arab women have become important contributors to the future digital economy, stressing the importance of investing in women’s skills and capabilities to support sustainable development and innovation.
She highlighted the impact of rapid technological change on business, investment and knowledge sectors, noting that it has created new opportunities for women to take leadership roles and contribute to economic growth.
Regional dialogue
The conference featured discussions on increasing women’s participation in technology-driven industries and leadership positions.
The first panel, moderated by Dr. Amal Al Heddabi, Board Member of the UAE Businesswomen Council, included H.E. Eng. Azza bint Suleiman Al Ismailiya from Oman, MP Basma Mubarak from Bahrain, Advisor Khadija Bouhulaika from Qatar and Dr. Farida Alhadramiah from Oman.
Speakers examined ways to strengthen women’s involvement in the digital economy and decision-making roles across the region.
Digital assets focus
A second panel explored the future of women-led organisations in the digital era, with discussions covering digital assets, virtual currencies, emerging technologies and regulatory developments.
Dr. Aisha Bin Lootah from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) outlined the UAE’s approach to regulating virtual assets and highlighted the contribution of Emirati women to the development of policies and institutions supporting financial technology and innovation.
Recognition and plans
During the event, the Norwegian Association for Justice and Peace presented Sheikha Wafa bint Humaid Al Mualla with an award in recognition of her work in community empowerment and international cooperation. The award was presented by the association’s president, Tarek Ibrahim.
The conference also received support from the office of H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism. H.E. Badriya Al Meidour, Assistant Undersecretary for Support Services at the Ministry of Economy, delivered a presentation on the role of cross-sector partnerships in supporting women’s economic empowerment.
Organisers announced plans to make the “Women’s Gateway to the Digital Economy” conference an annual event aimed at strengthening the role of Gulf women in the regional and global digital economy.
