The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has awarded a contract to upgrade and widen the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport.
This move aims to enhance traffic flow, reduce travel time, and improve the overall experience for passengers, while accommodating the airport’s rapid growth. Dubai International Airport surpassed 92 million passengers in 2024, reinforcing the need for continuous infrastructure development.
Bridge expansion project
The new project will expand the existing bridge from three to four lanes. This will be achieved by constructing a new bridge with an innovative steel box girder system integrated with a composite concrete slab.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of RTA’s Board, this engineering solution was chosen for its structural efficiency and quick construction. “The system ensures minimal disruption, as there will be no need for traffic diversions or temporary supports beneath the bridge,” he said.
The bridge will be 171 metres long, including its ramps, with the main span stretching nearly 70 metres. The expansion will increase the bridge’s capacity by 33%, enabling it to handle 5,600 vehicles per hour, up from the previous 4,200.
Enhancing safety and connectivity
In addition to widening the bridge, the project will include road pavement improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and landscaping to seamlessly integrate with the surrounding area. New street lighting will also be installed to enhance safety and visibility.
Al Tayer emphasized that this project aligns with RTA’s ongoing commitment to improving the city’s transportation network. “This expansion is part of our efforts to enhance traffic flow and strengthen connectivity between vital facilities, particularly Dubai International Airport,” he added. “It will improve safety, shorten journey times, and reduce congestion during peak hours.”
Ongoing improvements to Airport Street
This bridge expansion follows a broader initiative by RTA to enhance Airport Street, a key route leading to the airport. Recent upgrades have included the construction of new bridges and tunnels at crucial intersections, such as Al Rashidiya and Casablanca Street, to improve traffic efficiency.
The Airport Street project also featured the construction of bridges providing direct access to Terminals 1 and 3, as well as a new route from Al Garhoud to the airport. Additionally, Casablanca Street has been expanded from three to four lanes, improving access for passengers traveling to Dubai International Airport.
The completion of these projects further underscores Dubai’s ongoing efforts to maintain its position as a global transportation hub.
