The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has launched the first phase of its electric bus service, introducing eco-friendly transportation options to the region.
This initiative aims to improve public transport services while aligning with the UAE’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Engineer Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, announced that the initial rollout includes 10 electric buses serving three key routes to Dubai, Ajman, and Al Hamriyah. These routes were chosen based on thorough studies and demand data, focusing on areas with high passenger traffic.
Al Othmani emphasized the authority’s commitment to environmental sustainability, stating that they are implementing high-quality standards to support green transportation. The SRTA’s plans aim to reduce carbon emissions and foster a safe and sustainable transport environment, in line with government objectives.
Previously, SRTA signed a contract for the purchase of 10 electric buses after successfully testing two models for their efficiency in local climate conditions. The buses will be expanded in future phases, aligning with national strategies to decrease the carbon footprint through renewable energy.
The electric buses are of the King Long model, measuring 9 meters in length and capable of seating 41 passengers. They meet international safety standards and have received a European safety certification. Additionally, the buses are air-conditioned and equipped with a battery cooling system suitable for the UAE’s climate.
