Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas is known for his adventurous personality, both on and off the court.
Ahead of this year’s Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Tsitsipas took his appreciation for global cultures to a new level by getting fitted for a custom-made kandura, the traditional attire of the UAE.
The World No. 11 visited one of Dubai’s top tailors, Bait Al Kandora, to experience Emirati culture firsthand. During the fitting, Tsitsipas explored different fabrics, colors, and design details unique to the kandura, which varies across the Gulf region.
Tsitsipas talks cultural exploration
Tsitsipas shared his excitement about wearing the kandura, recalling his first experience with the traditional dress during a winter trip to Oman.
“It was incredibly comfortable, and I felt connected to the culture,” he said. “People don’t realize how comfortable it is – I’d pick it over any normal clothes any day.”
During his fitting, Tsitsipas learned more about the subtle differences in traditional dress across the Gulf. “I have a big appreciation for different cultures, and I’ve talked about it so many times,” he added. “Travelling allows me to explore different traditions.”
The Greek tennis star selected a sleek white kandura that reflected both Emirati tradition and his personal style. Tsitsipas debuted his new look at the ATP Players’ Party in Dubai, where he was warmly received by fans and fellow players.
Fashion as a bridge between cultures
Tsitsipas sees fashion as a way to connect with different cultures. “I’ve always loved exploring traditions through what people wear,” he said. “This experience has been truly special.”
His enthusiasm for embracing local customs earned him admiration at the event, with fans and players appreciating his efforts to immerse himself in Emirati culture.
