Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a project to build 16.5 km of new internal roads in Al Awir 1. This initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to improve infrastructure in residential areas, supporting Dubai’s growth and enhancing the well-being of its residents.

Key features of the Al Awir 1 project

The project will improve traffic flow and accessibility for residents. It includes:

  • New Entrance from Emirates Road: A new entrance to Al Awir 1 will ease access and reduce travel time.
  • Road Upgrades: Intersections and roundabouts will be added to improve traffic management.
  • Expansion of Emirates Road: A new lane will be added to Emirates Road, extending from the entrance of Al Awir 1 to Sharjah. This will increase the road’s capacity by 16%.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of RTA, said, This project aligns with RTA’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in residential areas, including road networks, lighting, and rainwater drainage systems. The goal is to improve traffic flow, accommodate growing traffic, and enhance road safety.”

He also mentioned that the project includes:

  • 5 km of Internal Roads: These will be built within the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment residential project.
  • 7.5 km Road to Emirates Road: A dual-lane road, with intersections, roundabouts, and U-turns, will connect Al Awir 1 to Emirates Road.

Improved access and increased capacity

  • Doubling Access Capacity: The new entrance will increase the area’s access capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour — a 100% increase.
  • Emirates Road Lane Addition: A 4 km lane will be added to Emirates Road, boosting capacity by 16%, and improving traffic flow for up to 2,000 vehicles per hour.

Other Ongoing RTA projects to improve access

The RTA is also working on similar projects in other residential areas:

  1. Al Warqa Project
  • New Entrance: Direct access from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is being developed.
  • Traffic Improvements: The upgrade will increase the capacity of Al Warqa 1 Street by 30%, reducing travel time by 80%, from 20 minutes to just 3.5 minutes.
  1. Nadd Hessa Project
  • New Access Points: Two new entrances from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.
  • Improved Traffic Flow: The new roads will handle up to 6,000 vehicles per hour, reducing travel time by 80%.
  1. Wadi Al Safa 3 Project
  • Direct Entrance: A new entrance from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will shorten travel distances and cut travel time to just 2 minutes.
  1. Al Barsha South Project
  • Road Upgrades: A third left-turn lane and additional lanes on Hessa Street will improve access to Al Barsha South.
  • Increased Capacity: The upgrades will boost capacity to 9,000 vehicles per hour, reducing wait times at traffic signals from 4 minutes to just 1 minute.

These road developments reflect the RTA’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and connectivity of residential areas in Dubai. The improvements are designed to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and provide better access for over 1 million residents across these key neighborhoods.
