Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 40% of its lighting replacement project at Dubai Metro stations and facilities, replacing 17,880 conventional lights with energy-efficient LED units out of a total of 44,700.
The project aims to reduce energy consumption, maintenance costs and carbon emissions while improving the reliability and sustainability of Dubai Metro facilities. It is being carried out in collaboration with Keolis MHI, which operates and maintains Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram.
The first two phases covered footbridges and passenger and operational areas across the Red and Green Lines. Work is now underway on the third phase, which includes car parks, tunnels, extension buildings and power distribution stations.
Dawood Alrais, Director of Rail Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency, said the project is a strategic investment in sustainability that will lower operating costs, reduce energy use and improve the passenger experience.
The new LED lights can last up to 11 years under continuous operation, compared with about one year for conventional lights. This will reduce replacement and maintenance needs, saving an estimated six to seven man-hours per unit over its lifespan.
Once completed in 2027, the project is expected to cut electricity consumption by more than 14 million kilowatt-hours annually.
