Travellers flying into Abu Dhabi could eventually find it easier to continue their journeys by train to destinations across the UAE, under a new partnership between Etihad Airways and Etihad Rail.
The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore ways of creating a more seamless air-rail travel experience for residents and visitors. The plans could include better connections between Zayed International Airport and the UAE’s national railway network, as well as integrated booking and passenger services.
UAE air-rail travel: what is being explored?
One of the key proposals is to study dedicated shuttle services between Zayed International Airport and the Mohammed Bin Zayed City Passenger Station.
The aim would be to make the transfer between air travel and the national railway network easier, allowing passengers arriving at the airport to connect more smoothly with rail services.
The MoU also covers the potential development of integrated air and rail booking experiences, alongside passenger services at stations. Together, these initiatives are intended to create a more connected end-to-end journey rather than treating flights and train travel as separate parts of a trip.
No specific launch date, shuttle timetable, fares or integrated booking system have been announced under the MoU.

For Etihad Rail, the agreement builds on the expansion of its role in passenger transport. Passenger rail services were launched earlier this year, and the company said it has continued to strengthen the national railway network’s role in connecting cities and regions across the UAE.

What happens next?
The agreement is currently an MoU to explore opportunities, rather than an announcement of a fully operational air-rail service.
The two organisations will study the proposed airport shuttle connection, integrated air-and-rail booking options and station-based passenger services. Further details on implementation, timings and availability have not been provided.
The broader objective is to create an integrated mobility ecosystem linking the UAE’s air and rail networks while supporting tourism, economic diversification and sustainable transport.
