Etihad Airways has launched two new routes to Southeast Asia, expanding its global network to 83 destinations. The UAE national carrier began flights to Medan, Indonesia on October 2, followed by the inaugural service to Phnom Penh, Cambodia on October 3.

Southeast Asia expansion

The new routes mark Etihad’s first entry into both cities and are part of its broader plan to strengthen air links between the Middle East and key markets in Asia, Europe and Africa.

“We’re proud to expand our network in Southeast Asia, inviting more guests across the region to explore our home with a convenient and direct route to Abu Dhabi, creating new connections for commerce and tourism between Abu Dhabi and the region,” said Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways.

He added, “We’re also pleased to encourage and inspire travel to these two new culturally rich and diverse places. Both Sumatra and Phnom Penh are extraordinary destinations with both natural and man-made wonders to offer and explore.”

Flights to Medan

Etihad’s new service to Medan opens access to North Sumatra, a region known for its rainforests, volcanoes, and indigenous Batak culture. Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake and a UNESCO-listed site, is one of the area’s top attractions.

Medan also serves as an economic centre in western Indonesia, and the new route is expected to support business and trade in addition to tourism.

New route to Cambodia

Phnom Penh becomes the airline’s first destination in Cambodia, with four weekly flights increasing to six from November 1, 2025. The capital city is a popular entry point to the country’s cultural and historical landmarks, including Angkor Wat.

The city also offers growing opportunities for business and is known for its emerging arts scene and culinary heritage.

Both new routes are operated using Etihad’s Airbus A321LR, featuring a three-cabin layout. This includes the airline’s first narrowbody First Class suites, offering fully flat beds, private sliding doors and exclusive services such as concierge support and a global chauffeur option.

The launch of Medan and Phnom Penh follows Etihad’s continued expansion in Asia. Upcoming destinations include Krabi, Hanoi, Chiang Mai and Hong Kong. The airline has introduced 30 new routes this year across four continents, with more launches planned for 2026.

Etihad Guest members can earn rewards through the airline’s “Extraordinary Challenge,” which encourages members to visit up to 15 of its new destinations. Participants stand to win up to five million Etihad Guest Miles. The challenge runs until May 25, 2026.
