Etihad Rail launches Dhs1 million global innovation award

The UAE is set to revolutionize its transportation landscape with the launch of Etihad Rail’s passenger services by 2026.

This state-of-the-art rail network will connect 11 cities across all seven emirates, creating a faster, more sustainable, and efficient travel option for residents and visitors.

Extensive network linking 11 cities

Etihad Rail’s passenger network will cover approximately 1,200 kilometers, connecting major urban centers and strategic locations including:

  • Abu Dhabi

  • Dubai

  • Sharjah

  • Ruwais

  • Al Mirfa

  • Al Dhaid

  • Fujairah

  • Ras Al Khaimah

  • Al Ain

  • Ghuweifat (border with Saudi Arabia)

  • Sohar (via a link connecting Oman through the Hafeet Rail project)

This comprehensive coverage enhances inter-emirate connectivity, fostering economic growth and easing travel across the country.

High-speed passenger service

Passenger trains on the Etihad Rail network will operate at speeds up to 200 km/h, drastically reducing travel times. For example:

  • The trip between Abu Dhabi and Dubai will take approximately 57 minutes.

  • Travel from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will be around 105 minutes.

This speed and efficiency are expected to transform commuting patterns and encourage greater use of public transport.

Modern and convenient station locations

Stations have been strategically placed in key areas to maximize accessibility:

  • Abu Dhabi: Near Khalifa City and Al Ruwais

  • Dubai: Adjacent to Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai Production City

  • Sharjah: Close to University City

  • Fujairah: Located in the Sakamkam area

These stations are equipped with modern amenities to ensure comfort and convenience for travelers.

Sustainable transportation system

Etihad Rail’s passenger service will be fully integrated with existing transportation networks, including metro lines, buses, and taxis. Travellers will benefit from a unified ticketing system, enabling seamless transfers across different modes of transport using a single access card.

This integration supports the UAE’s broader goals for sustainable urban mobility and reduced carbon emissions.

Regional connectivity

The Etihad Rail network is poised for further expansion beyond the current phase:

  • A 303-kilometer rail link between Sohar in Oman and Al Wathba in Abu Dhabi is underway, fostering stronger regional connectivity.

  • Plans to extend the network northwards include linking Ras Al Khaimah to Umm Al Quwain and Ajman.

  • Upcoming routes are planned to connect Expo City Dubai with Abu Dhabi and enhance tourist access by linking Fujairah to Dibba and Musandam.

These expansions will boost cross-border trade and tourism while supporting economic diversification.

The Etihad Rail project is projected to add around Dhs 145 billion (approximately $39.5 billion) to the UAE’s GDP over the next five decades. It also plays a critical role in the UAE’s Vision 2050 by promoting net-zero emissions through sustainable transportation infrastructure.

By providing a reliable, eco-friendly alternative to road transport, Etihad Rail contributes significantly to the country’s environmental and economic goals.
